BMI Index Shows: We Are Fat
The BMI calculator determines what healthy weight has an individual, in order to prevalence the underweight-overweight of obesity, in case of any health problem or without it.
Are we really overweight? How can we determine it? Everybody has heard about BMI index and BMI charts. The U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 1994 have shown that 49% of American women and 59% of men have BMIs over 25. What does it mean? This is a very safety sign of obesity.
But 2% of the men and 4% of the women had the score more than of 40, which indicates that there are morbidly obese. There are also fearing regarding to starvation or anorexia. Doctors quote some scores from 18.5 to 20, but the most frequently score states up to 19. These scores are mostly found among females. The BMI index nearing 15, usually are the sign of starvation and the informal criteria for anorexia nervosa.
We can ask what if we calculate the BMI for children. Is it calculated in the same way as for adults? Yes, we calculate it in the same way, but the difference is that we compare to the values which are typical for other children. The BMI are compared to the children with the same age and sex. The percentile that is under 5th percentile indicates underweight and which is more than 95th percentile is obese. The young girls between 12 and 16 have higher BMI than the boys at the same age.
Regarding to BMI chart the linear scales may differ from time to time and country. In the U.S The National Institutes of Health along with World Health Organization modified the scale from 27.8 to 25 BMI in 1998. According to these modifications 30 million Americans became “overweight”. It was also asked to lower the normal weight in South East Asian types to 23 BMI and making expert studies in different body types.
In Singapore the BMI index reflects on health risk rather than weight. In this view the index between 18.5 and 22.9 shows a low risk of development of heart disease and any other problem. Those with BMI between 23 and 27.4 moderate risk and above 27.5 have high risk of health problems.
The BMI chart doesn’t show you if are athlete or muscled. Use it if you are more than 20 or even older. Of course, as I have before mentioned, you can calculate BMI for children too, but observe the differences between children and adults.
