Just like many other fad diets, Detox diets also promises quick weight loss. Most fad diets however make you lose weight too fast by unnatural and unhealthy means. The greatest drawback is that you will gain back all that weight as fast as you lost it once you resume your normal diet.

The detox diet claims to cleanse all the toxins and wastes from your body that have accumulated throughout the years. It is true that you will lose a few pounds initially but this loss is not fat loss. Furthermore, the detox diet often recommends fasting. Different detox diets recommend different type of fasting. Some recommend eating fruits and vegetables only while others may even require starving totally. Starving must be avoided as it does not help you lose weight. Instead, it slows down your metabolism rate causing your body to store more fat rather than burning it.

Fasting for a short period may be beneficial but prolonged fasting can have damaging effects on your body. As such, detox diets can be effective in weight loss if the diet consists of fruits and vegetables and does not recommend starving. Whatever the diet is, ensure that it is balanced and high in nutrition.
